Historical Background
In the midst of the Cold War, Germany was divided into two distinct parts. An important historical chapter began in May 1989, as Hungary boldly dismantled its border fence with Austria, piercing through the Iron Curtain that had long separated Europe from the U.S.S.R. Eventually, by November, even the formidable Berlin Wall, a symbol of Germany's division, started to crumble, paving the way for a future brimming with unity, and limitless possibilities.

The sequence of events culminated in the first free elections of the German Democratic Republic in March 1990. This led to negotiations between West and East Germany and ultimately resulted in a promise of unification. Germany was officially unified on October 3, 1990, which has been the German national holiday ever since.
