The KV-5 is a heavily-armored Soviet behemoth with the highest HP pool of its tier. Given that, it's capable of withstanding a ludicrous amount of punishment. Add to that an imposing bulk of ~100 tons and a top speed of 40 km/h, and you have a vehicle capable of dealing a sizeable chunk of damage just from ramming alone.
It should be noted that the KV-5 has a number of crucial spots on it that should not be hit by incoming fire, so stick close to cover whenever possible and you're sure to excel.
