Memorial Day as we presently know it was first called “Decoration Day” and was established by a Union Veterans Group, the “Grand Army of the Republic” in 1868. Decoration Day was a was a chance to remember and more the loss of fallen soldiers.

After World War I, Decoration Day was reinterpreted as a salute to all American military personnel who had died in battle. After World War II, it became known as Memorial Day. Though it was originally held on May 30 when flowers used to decorate graves were in bloom, its date was changed to the last Monday in May in 1971 when it became a Federal holiday.
