Canada Day celebrates the anniversary of the Constitution Act of 1867, which created the Dominion of Canada by uniting three British colonies: the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. On July 1, 1867, Canada officially became a self-governing nation within the British Empire. Expand your knowledge of the Great White North with these fascinating facts from the land of beavers and moose!
Before 1982, the holiday's official name was Dominion Day (Jour de la Confédération in French), and while it honored Canada's status as a British dominion, it didn't resonate strongly with French Canadians. In 1982, as Canada gained full constitutional independence from Britain, the holiday was officially titled Canada Day (Fête du Canada), making it more inclusive for all Canadians.
Canada produces about 81% of the world's maple syrup, with Quebec alone producing over 90% of Canada's total. In fact, Canada has a strategic maple syrup reserve that stores up to 60,000 tons to protect against supply shortages. Sweet!
Canada is a multicultural nation where more than 50 Indigenous languages are spoken, and Indigenous peoples represent about 5% of the population. Canada officially recognizes three groups of them: First Nations, Inuit, and Métis, each with their own distinct cultures, traditions, and histories. This makes Canada a diverse and culturally rich nation.
Canada has more lakes than any other country in the world—in fact, it has an estimated 3 million lakes, and more than 560 lakes that are larger than 100 square kilometers. About 20% of the world's fresh water is in Canadian lakes, and the country holds more fresh surface water than any other nation. This makes Canada uniquely special: it's not just big in land area, it's also the world's water reservoir!
In many parts of Canada, especially in the west and north, mineral particles from glacial erosion mix with meltwater, creating rock flour, filling lakes and rivers with stunning colors. The fine sediment reflects light in a way that produces turquoise, emerald, or milky blue shades in glacial lakes. This makes Canadian glacial lakes often look so vivid and unique!
Canada's contribution to the Allies' war effort during WWII included the Ram tank, a domestically designed and mass-produced tank based on the American M3 Lee chassis. The Ram became a key workhorse of Canadian armor, with over 1,900 produced from 1941 through 1943. Canada, without a single tank factory in 1939, ended the war producing more armored vehicles than Italy and Japan combined.
Canada's engineers showed some creativity, featuring experimental and quirky vehicles with animal-inspired names. For example, the Skink was a self-propelled anti-aircraft tank built on a Grizzly (Sherman) chassis, armed with four 20 mm autocannons to defend against low-flying planes. It was named after the skink lizard—the only kind of lizard that lives in Ontario—to highlight that the tank didn't originate in Quebec!
The iconic red-and-white maple leaf flag was officially adopted only in 1965. Before that, Canada used the Red Ensign, combining the Union Jack with the Canadian coat of arms.
