The Battle of Halbe

In April 1945, World War II was grinding to a violent close. As the potent T-34-85 and heavy IS tanks of Marshal Ivan Konev’s First Ukrainian Front pushed towards the German capital, they met the German 9th Army near the village of Halbe, only 60 kilometers from Berlin. Vastly outnumbered and under threat of being cut off, the 9th planned a fighting retreat. The once-peaceful village of Halbe rang with the thunder of cannon fire. When the smoke cleared, the 9th Army was finished as an effective fighting force. The Battle of the Halbe was over.
