76th Anniversary of Victory Day in Europe!

On Monday, April 16, 1945, at 4:00 a.m., Soviet Marshal Georgi Zhukov ordered the 1st Belorussian Front to storm the German defensive positions at the Seelow Heights, commencing the opening phase of the Battle of Berlin.

Three days later, having overrun the so-called "Gates of Berlin," the Red Army prepared for the final push for the most prized jewel of the European theatre of World War II: the capital of the Third Reich. On April 20, over 9,000 pieces of artillery started shelling the city and did not stop until its final surrender.

By May 2-3, the city’s garrison had already surrendered, but intense skirmishes continued westward until May 8-9, when the Germans finally signed the Instrument of Surrender, putting an end to all major fighting in Europe, and closing one of the most tragic chapters in human history.
