Honoring Wargaming's Military Employees: Marcus Diemer

Military Appreciation Month is an important month for us here at Wargaming. We want to spotlight those employees that served in the military and celebrate them throughout the month of May. This time we speak with Marcus Diemer, aka Tankology, Player Gatherings Manager at Wargaming America and best known for traveling the United States in the Wargaming Road Tour Hummer!

When did you join?

I joined the German Armed Forces in June 1992 as a four-year voluntary and left May, 2004 as a Gunnery Sergeant.

Which branch did you join?

Armored Infantry.

Where did you go?

Augustdorf and Münster in Germany.

What was your job/assignment?

Infantry Sergeant, Head of Motor Pool.

Tell me about a couple of your most memorable experiences.

The Exercise: Armored Infantry Battalion in Battle.
Wildflecken, Germany was probably the coldest winter inside a tank I have ever experienced. We had to live in our SPZ Marder 1A5 for about three weeks straight. Imagine a crew of nine men inside a space of maybe 10-15 square feet with no shower. It was a TRUE "man cave" with that smell.

KFOR Mission (Kosovo)
I don't want to say much about it but I lost roughly 95 pounds in four months. This really changed my views about the important things in life.

Were you awarded any medals or citations?

I received the Kosovo KFOR medal for participation in the Kosovo mission.

What did you do for entertainment?

A lot of sports and fitness activities, and of course, gaming.

What is your position now with Wargaming and do you feel that your military experience has helped you in this field?

My experience and my interest in military history, as well as my passion as a gamer has helped me tenfold. It is still a big part of my work ethic and drives some important values for me in my day-to-day life. Things like:

  • Respect
  • Punctuality
  • A positive attitude
  • Being organized and planning in advance

You can find Marcus in-game as Tankology!
